Rolling again

As I mentioned quite a while ago – I took a dive off my mountain bike and really screwed myself up.  Specifically, I crushed my wrist and broke the bones around my eye.  The eye healed on its own but the wrist required major surgery.  I’m now the proud owner of 11 eleven screws, 1 pin and a nice big plate that holds me wrist together.

For the past four weeks I’ve been going to physical therapy three times a week.  Eric, the therapist and done a great job.  We’re pretty close to restoring my full range of motion to my wrist and we are starting to work on dexterity.  The biggest issue I can see us having is my thumb.  Because of the way I fell, the big meaty muscle at the base of my thumb that muscle is still healing up.  I suspect it will take several more weeks until the muscle gets healed up and I get full function of my thumb back.

I’m also starting to work out too.  Getting back to it isn’t easy.  Not being able to exercise for close to a month has caused me to lose a lot.  Worse it wasn’t like I had a lot to lose to start.

The cool thing is that my progress has been really fast.  Eric is really impressed how far I’ve come in the amount of time we’ve been working together.  However, motivation is a big factor.  Prior to pulling my stunt I had decided I wanted to go to Superbike School.  At that time I was planning on going in June.  However, gravity has changed my plans.  Technically, I could probably go to school in June, but I don’t think I would get everything out of it.  So I’ll go in August instead.  I’ve already paid my deposit and have everything setup.  So the idea of learning to ride a motorcycle the way professional racers do is providing me all the motivation I need.

In order to do it I need to be in better shape than I am now.  So between going to the gym and PT; I don’t seem to have as much free time as normal.
